Deregulation of the Australian Wheat Export Market: What Happened to Wheat Prices?

ABSTRACT

This report investigates whether deregulation of the Australian wheat export market induced a structural change in the price data generation process. We analyze the unit root properties of Western Australian wheat price series by testing for the possibility of single and double structural breaks. Daily spot prices for the period of May 20, 2003, to September 14, 2010 are used. We find the wheat price series has a unit root with two structural breaks but neither breaks coincides with the time when the Wheat Export Marketing Act 2008 came into effect on July 1, 2008. The implication of our results is that deregulation was not the main cause of structural breaks in the price series in the sample period.     

区域经济收入分布的动态演进分析——以浙江省为例

基于浙江省区域经济人均收入数据,采用核密度函数和马尔科夫分析法,对区域经济收入分布的动态演进过程进行了分析.结果表明,浙江区域人均收入分布特征有别于全国或省区层面上的收入分布特征:浙江区域收入分布整体上呈现单峰、偏态的分布形态,且区域间收入差异呈现扩大的趋势.区域间的状态转移矩阵显示,收入状态的流动性较低,仅在相邻的状态之间转移,难以实现状态问跨越式转移.在经济的长期收入均衡状态中,收入分布分散于四种类型状态空间,其中,不发达地区将占主要比重,不会出现区域经济趋同现象,收入差距会有进一步扩大的趋势.

The costs of foreign single listing

A significant number of firms conduct their initial public offerings in a foreign market without a domestic listing; this is known as a foreign single listing. The existing literature has mainly focused on examining cross-listings – where firms are listed in both the domestic market and one or more foreign markets – with little attention to foreign single listings. This study examines the costs of foreign single listings. Using a sample of Chinese firms, we show that – on average – the stocks of foreign single-listed firms are undervalued by around 20–30% relative to cross-listed firms. The results are robust in both panel regressions and in a natural experiment analysis. Our findings have strong implications for firms which may consider listing overseas.     

Business Forecasting of Double‐trend Time Series: An Improved PLS‐based Time‐varying Weight Combination Approach

Business forecasting with double‐trend time series (long‐term trends and seasonal volatility) has been challenging due to its complexity. Neither a single time series model nor a fixed‐weight combination approach can fully capture the comprehensive information. We address this issue by proposing an improved partial least squares (PLS) based time‐varying weight combination approach. The proposed method can handle the relations both between the single models involved and between single models and time ordering with time‐varying weights. The test on 20 simulated datasets demonstrates the better and more robust performance of the method. We also apply it to three real datasets. The results show that our approach represents a significant improvement over the existing methods in terms of data fitness and prediction accuracy. Copyright © 2017 ASAC.
